The October film (Sunday 19th Oct), The Singer, is one of the year’s most charming romances. Gérard Depardieu plays Alain Moreau, a fifty something crooner with a capacious gut, a sun-bed addiction and a repertoire of ballads that whiff like two-week-old Camembert. The middle-aged divorcées at his night-club can’t get enough, jostling with each other for autographs and backstage invitations. Young and beautiful, Marion (Cécile De France) is way outside his usual demographic. But, after a full-blown assault of champagne and sotto voce chat-up lines, she happily succumbs to this twinkle-eyed walrus of love.
Depardieu plays a blinder, imbuing what in lesser hands could have been a pathetic caricature with something far more affecting. De France is his ideal foil, eyeing her unlikely suitor with haughtiness, then bemusement, then genuine affection.
The film show is in Broughton Village Hall, doors open at 7:30pm with the main feature at 8:15pm. New member and guest are welcome.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Sunday 28th Sept - Broughton Village Hall

Doors open 7:30pm - main film 8:15pm

The season commences with a rush of joy and colour as we meet Poppy, an irrepressible primary school teacher who dances through life with a profound philosophy of happiness. Leigh's heroine, a role that won Hawkins the Best Actress Award at the Berlin Film Festival, has shades of Amelie and an echo of Pollyanna and wears a necklace that holds a piece of a rainbow. She likes to make people happy and dance the flamenco. As is to be expected from a Mike Leigh film, however, all is not sunshine and flowers and Poppy meets anger and misery in her bright little life, in the form of her bigoted, snappy driving instructor and also at school where she has to deal with bullying. At every turn she meets adversity with humour and love. A light and flowing musical score and great performances from the central characters make this improvisational comedy drama an absolute gem and delightfully uplifting to watch
